INSINÖÖRILIITTO - UNION OF ENGINEERS

The Finnish Union of Engineering Students, Insinööriopiskelijaliitto IOL ry, is the biggest member association of Insinööriliitto IL ry, the Union of Professional Engineers in Finland - which is a member of Akava – the Confederation of Unions for Academic Professionals in Finland. After making a graduation announcement to the IOL, the newly graduated engineer is transferred from IOL to a local association of Uusi Insinööriliitto (Helsingin Insinöörit HI ry for example if you live in the Helsinki area).

Insinööriliitto IL ry, works as a trade union both actively and resolutely for the benefits of engineers, engineering students and other experts of technical field. IL promotes professional status, career and educational opportunities and the working conditions of its members. 

IL´s operations are based on its members´ needs and decisions. With a unanimous and parallel support from its affiliate organizations IL looks after the interests of its members.

IL comprises thirty regional branches and ten national branches; through which engineers and other experts of technical field belong to the union. Engineering students are organized through Insinööriopiskelijaliitto IOL, the Finnish Union of Engineering Students. There are about 17 000 students in IOL. The total membership of IL is 70 000.

UIL has a central office in Helsinki; the union also has four regional offices situated in Oulu, Mikkeli, Tampere and Pori.  IL belongs to Akava, the Confederation of Unions for Academic Professionals in Finland.

 

AKAVA - CENTRAL CONFEDERATION

Akava - the Confederation of Unions for Academic Professionals in Finland - is a trade union confederation for those with a university degree or other high-level education and it watches over the shared financial, professional, educational and other social interests of its members, as well as safeguarding their status and position in society. Akava has 34 member unions of which The Union of Professional Engineers in Finland, Insinööriliitto IL ry is the 2nd biggest member.

As an engineering student, the only way to be a member of Akava is to join the IOL - The Finnish union of Engineering Students.

Together with other central confederations, Akava conducts negotiations over collective wage and labor agreements. YTN - Delegation of Professional and Managerial Employees - negotiates collective agreements for those working in the private sector and JUKO - Public Sector Negotiating Commission – for those working in the public sector.
